Earcons

What are earcons?

An earcon is an abstract, often musical sound whose meaning is established within a system — for example a rising tone for "on" and a falling tone for "off".

Unlike auditory icons, earcons do not imitate real-world sounds. Users learn their meaning through consistent use, which makes them flexible and well suited to building a coherent sound system.

Earcons and auditory icons

Earcons

Abstract tones and motifs. Meaning is learned, and related events can share structure such as rhythm, pitch or timbre.

Auditory icons

Sounds based on recognizable real-world events, such as paper crumpling for deleting a file. Meaning is often understood immediately.

Choosing between them

Many products combine both: auditory icons where a clear metaphor exists, earcons where an abstract system works better.

Designing earcons

Create a family

Derive earcons from shared motifs so the system sounds coherent and recognizable.

Encode relationships

Use direction, rhythm or timbre to express pairs and hierarchies, such as on/off or success/error.

Stay consistent

Use each earcon for one meaning only, so users can learn it reliably.

Check cultural context

Musical associations differ between markets; test earcons with users in your target regions.

Keep it learnable

Limit the number of distinct earcons and make important differences clearly audible.
